SEO – Is it still worth it?

With all the different acronyms out there such as SEO, SEM, PPC and with tons of services available, is it even worth it to consider SEO anymore?  The short answer…YES, if you want to succeed that is.

If you are building a website you are obviously hoping to market a good or service and you want to get found by potential clients or customers.  This means you want to turn up in the search engines.  This means you need to maximize your SEO efforts, and you start with On-Page SEO.

On-Page SEO is that tactics you use on your website to optimize it for the google web crawlers.  These are simple tactics you can take, or that your designer should be taking such as:

  • utilizing a single keyword to act as the focus for each page
  • utilizing keywords in your titles, links, and img names
  • structuring your site to optimize for easily “spoon feeding” your site’s data to the crawlers
  • and more

You also have the ability to use Off-Page SEO.  Off-Page SEO tactics consist of work done off of your site to help promote and build back links.  This consist of doing the following to help Google’s web crawlers from finding your site often, and getting new content each time they do.  Some of the Off-Page SEO techniques:

  • guest blog posts on other reputable sites
  • getting back-links
  • signing up for social networks and linking to your site
  • add your site to online directories
  • add your site to search engines
  • add your site to local site directories
  • Create quality content
  • and more

If your goal is to increase your position in Google’s search results to get more customers, then you need to consider SEO as important to your business as marketing is for your physical store front.

Responsive web design and mobile visitors

It is amazing to me as a web designer that I still see websites being designed that overlook smartphones and tablets. With the “death of the PC”, you would think web designers would put more emphasis on responsive design, but some still do not. Why does this matter? Well, let’s talk about responsive design, and then you will see why it’s so important to include it, and the ultimate cost of not doing so.

responsive

What is Responsive Web Design?

Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience-easy reading and navigation with a minimum of re-sizing, panning, and scrolling-across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).

A site designed with RWD adapts the layout to the viewing environment by using fluid, proportion-based grids, flexible images, and CSS3 media queries(an extension of the @media rule).

Now What the heck does that mean?

    • basically what that means is that a responsive website will change how it looks when being viewed on a desktop, tablet, or mobile phone
    • This benefits you because it means that you don’t have to spend extra money on a mobile version, tablet version, and desktop version
    • It also means updating your site is accomplished by doing the task once. Imagine if you had to update all 3 versions of your website each time
    • And finally, one last reason why it’s a blessing for you… Since there are hundreds of different screen sizes available, if you truly wanted to optimize your site, you would need to have hundreds of variations of your website, not just 3

Now that you have an idea of what responsive web design is, why should you not overlook mobile visitors from smartphones and tablets?

According to a study conducted by Google in 2012, 94 percent of smartphone users look for local information on their phone and 90 percent take action, such as making a purchase or contacting a business. If you have a business, addressing your mobile presence is a must.

In June 2013 Google’s Matt Cutts, head of search spam, said the search engine will begin to demote mobile websites with slow load times in its search results. As early as 2010, Google started incorporating site speed into their ranking algorithm.

Below are some compelling statistics via HubSpot:

    • 96% of smartphone users have encountered sites that weren’t designed for mobile devices
    • 48% of users say they feel frustrated and annoyed when on sites that are poorly optimized for mobile
    • 78% of users want to be able to find what they’re looking for on a mobile site in just one or two clicks
    • 76% of users want a business’ mobile site to fit the small screen of their smartphone better

The take away from this is that a website built using responsive design is the answer to attracting and keeping more mobile visitors. Not considering tablet and smartphone users when having your site built is like turning almost half of them away from your business.
